The rule in one line

Regulation (EU) 2023/1115 bans placing on, or exporting from, the EU market products linked to deforestation or forest degradation after 31 December 2020, or produced in breach of the laws of the country of origin.

Which products?

Coffee, cocoa, cattle, soy, oil palm, rubber and wood, plus derived goods such as chocolate, leather, furniture and paper.

Who is affected?

Companies placing these products on the EU market. In practice, data requests reach the origin: Mexican and Latin American farmers, cooperatives and exporters.

What is required?

Geolocation of every plot (point or polygon), proof of no deforestation and of legality, and a due diligence statement (DDS) filed in the EU information system.

Dates

30 December 2026 for large and medium companies; 30 June 2027 for micro and small companies (with exceptions). Dates have already moved twice; we check official sources regularly. Information current as of October 2026.
