A dacha is much more than a country house. In the Soviet Union and the territories that formed it, dachas have been places of rest, family life and food growing. For generations, small productive gardens allowed families to develop intensive horticulture, seed saving, soil preparation and seasonal use of resources.

• Historical origin: country houses with gardens, predating the Soviet period.
• Soviet period: the dacha garden became a widespread family practice.
• Contemporary tradition: still alive in many countries that were part of the USSR.
• What we study: intensive growing, companion planting and rotations, seedbeds, compost, food preservation, use of space, adapted varieties and diverse gardens. These are not Soviet inventions: they are practices the dacha nurtured, which we compare with the chinampa.

Adapting any technique requires studying Xochimilco's soil, water, climate and biodiversity. The chapín method, canal mud and ahuejote trees are the foundation of this place.
